PREMIUM PINOT NOIR 2013

Product Description

Bass Phillip’s flagship wine: a wine with strong personality in aroma and  complex flavor. Layered, textured and long.

MARKET POSITION:  Second highest rated pinot noir in Australia:  “Outstanding category”, Langtons Classification, 2005 & 2010(classification released every five years); Jeremy Oliver’s Wine Annual rates it 93-96 over the past few vintages.

CURRENT VINTAGE: 2011

DESCRIPTION:  This wine is extremely fine and stylish. A product of the difficult "La Nigna season" in Victoria, with limited sunshine and high rainfall, this wine is dominated by a multitude of secondary spices, minerals and complex fungi character (not fungal!). The result is a wine of amazing finesse and elegance. The aroma is lively, with a  combination of pale stone fruits and complex secondary perfumes.

To quote the eminent Tokyo wine journalist, Mr. Kayutsuki Tanaka, who tasted the wine in October 2013:  " Heart-grabbingly charming and neurotically beautiful dark and spiritual angel! This is a kind of special Pinot Noir which is so seductive that I can’t stop stepping outside of normal living world into endless maze of sensations.  ....  A small and lean wine? NO, NO, NO! What a presence of energy! Serenity and tranquility with movement., with vivid passion and determined mind, even with pleasure! Pleasantly pinching acidity and fine-grained diamond-like solid minerality inside moisture-rich soomthness with peacock tail finish. Better than Reserve Pinot Noir 2010 in terms of spiritual communication and heart-lifting capability. A great wine. Should be the starting point of the new era of Australian Pinot Noir. "  Phew!

Grippy, minerallic, enticing, spiced nose with integrated new oak and hints of power within. Floral notes: roses; gentle, tangy plums dominate. The first impact on the palate is “complexity”: hard to identify specific fruits and herbs … they merge into a layered concoction which reveals different components with each sip. Strawberries and plums are vibrant but tightly packed within the subtle but firm acidity and the characteristic, astringent “dryness” of this vintage Minerality is a strong feature in the back half. The flavour persists and is supported by a very fine tannin balance. Chewey texture. We believe this wine shows substantial character from this difficult vintage because of vine age (34 years) and our very low cropping regime.  It will improve over the next six to eight years.  Breathe this wine for a couple of hours before serving.

OVERALL RATING: Halliday 94 points.  We put it between 94 and 96 points.
